Crossing Guard Killed Near School

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

A crossing guard was killed near Arroyo Elementary School last week and now officials are releasing her name. Susan Burk, a 62-year-old Simi Valley woman, was standing on the corner of Los Angeles and Socrates avenues at around 2 p.m. when she was struck by a Chevy Cruz.

The accident also involved two other vehicles. Police say that Burk was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries two hours later. She was a longtime employee of the city, though on that day she was covering for another crossing guard.

While this exact cause of this accident is under investigation, we know that pedestrians face so many unpredictable dangers in and around the roadway. If you need a Ventura County pedestrian accident attorney, contact the Law Offices of J. Jeffrey Herman today.

California Numbers

Whether you are simply walking from the parking lot to the store, jogging down the sidewalk, or doing your job, there are so many dangers that pedestrians can encounter on a daily basis. While you do what you can to be safe, you cannot control the actions of other people and drivers around you.

Pedestrians are vulnerable to being struck by heavier objects, whether that means vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, and more. When a person gets hit, they are likely going to sustain some kind of injury.

  • There were over 14,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic accidents during the latest reporting year. Nearly 900 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents.

The injuries from pedestrian accidents are often severe, even catastrophic. A person can end up with long hospital stays, long-term rehabilitation, or even a disability that can lead to lifelong medical costs.

Will insurance cover all of these expenses? What if you can no longer work and earn an income?

Why They Happen

Far too many of these accidents occur in places where pedestrians should be safe – in crosswalks and intersections. Drivers who are in a hurry often think it is okay to ignore signs and lights warning them of pedestrians in the area.

Some of the biggest threats to pedestrians are drunk drivers and distracted drivers. Those who make the choice to drive impaired to jeopardize the lives of everyone around them, especially pedestrians with no protections. Drivers who are busy reading text messages or the news on their phones often do not see a person nearby until it is too late.
