We can usually trust that we will be safe when we head out each day on foot. Sometimes we want to ditch the car and walk to the store. Other times, we are simply getting some fresh air or walking the dog. Unfortunately, we know that the negligence of other drivers can cause major injuries.

If you need an Oxnard pedestrian accident attorney, call the Law Offices of J. Jeffrey Herman today. We will get to work securing the compensation you deserve. Today, we want to talk about a recent pedestrian crash in town.

A Tragic Crash in Oxnard

We have learned that a woman died earlier this month after a hit-and-run crash. The incident happened on Colonia Road and Marquita Street.

Police arrived on the scene and found a 49-year-old woman lying on the roadway and that the vehicle that struck her was not at the scene. A witness said they saw a red SUV speeding away from the scene after the incident. The victim was rushed to the hospital but her injuries worsened and she died a few days later.

This incident is still under investigation and, as of this writing, a suspect has not been identified or arrested.

We know that these incidents happen far too often. For the latest reporting year in California, we know that there were over 14,000 pedestrian crash injuries and 867 pedestrian fatalities. The problem is that pedestrians have no way to protect themselves from the force of a vehicle slamming into them. Nearly every pedestrian crash results in an injury or fatality. The injuries victims sustain are often serious and include:

  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations
  • Internal organ damage
  • Internal bleeding
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries

These injuries often lead to major medical expenses that can leave victims and their families in financial jeopardy.

We know that so many of these crashes happen in areas where a pedestrian should not have to worry about being struck, places like intersections with walk lights, crosswalks, sidewalks, and parking lots. While many times a driver is simply not paying attention, we know that there are certain negligent behaviors that are more dangerous. This includes drivers who are:

  • Impaired by alcohol or drugs
  • Distracted by their phones or other devices
  • Willfully driving over the speed limit
